County Information

HISTORY
Schuylkill county was created in 1811 from parts of Berks and Northampton counties. It was named for the Schuylkill River. Today Schuylkill county is known for Mrs. T's pierogies and Yuengling beer (America's oldest brewery). There are hi-tech businesses like AlliedSignal and Alcoa. However 20% of Schuylkill county's 1/2 million acres is devoted to agriculture. Additionally, despite the mining industry's decline, Schuylkill county has 90% of the WORLD'S anthracite coal reserve.
AGRICULTURE
700 Farm Families produce $42Million in economic benefits to Schuylkill county annually. Products include: poultry, dairy, fruits, vegetables, potatoes, field crops, forestry, animal products, food processing, and farm equipment operations.

 

HUMAN SERVICES:
Schuylkill county provides a full array of human services for its citizens. This includes programs for the elderly, children and youth, MH/MR, and substance abuse.

Schuylkill county also has a CareerLink Job Center which provides "one-stop" career and employment services to its citizens.
